In poker, a “slot” is a position in the hand that allows a player to draw a card without being forced to do so against the opposition. This strategy can be extremely profitable, especially when the player is at the table for a long time and can afford to take a few draws before the game is over.

The word is also used for a position in a computer system that assigns different probabilities to each stop on a reel. The microprocessors in modern slot machines can even adjust these odds based on how much money the player has bet. In football, a slot receiver is usually a second wide receiver who lines up just inside the line of scrimmage. They are also important blockers, helping to pick up blitzes and give running backs space on outside run plays.
